Day 1 - Friends Lost

Well today is day 1 for my starting Champix. I have attempted many times before without success using many other methods. However, I must say I am a bit worried as I already have depression for which I am on medication and I have heard from others taking this it has made them worse and even suicidal. But this is my last hope. I have to stop smoking for my health. And I have no support from anyone as they all smoke and said if I stop they won't even come to my home. :(

Best of luck, I was pretty scared of taking Champix too. Every weird thought or grumpy attack had me freaking out about the side effects. Good to remember though that nicotine withdrawal makes some people feel depressed/anxious/insane/grumpy and then there's all the physical effects. I wonder if a lot of the side effects being blamed on Champix are actually just the withdrawal.
Can you get some extra support from somewhere other than your friends who smoke?

You'll make new friends. Real ones. We may not know you, but we'll support you all the way. You can do this! And I promise it will be worthwhile making the journey to stop smoking.

I also had the same concerns regarding the effects the Champix would have on my already diagnosed and medicated depression. I spoke to my doctor about these concerns and basically came away thinking that it worth taking the risk.
I'm on the second week of the tablets and have so far not had any side effects. It's a good feeling.
If I look back and think about how much the smoking effected my self esteem, hating being addicted to them and a social lepper and believe that all these contributed and dead my depressive state. I look forward to having a huge feeling of freedom once I have overcome this addiction.
Also, just a thought - it seems to me that you may need better friends if the ones you have aren't willing to support you.
I wish you as much strength as you need.

When the studies were conducted on Champix, those who were taking the placebo had "suicidal thoughts and tendencies" also. It all comes down to your susceptibility to such thoughts. If you have them, you've just got to tell yourself that it's the Champix making you think this way and you don't actually think that. I know it's hard- I'm also on Champix (for the second time) but you can do it.
As for your "friends", you'll do better without them if that's the way they are. Your mates are supposed to be your biggest fans and support you through everything and anything. If they can't do that then they're not worthy of your friendship and loyalty. You can do it!
