I have decided to quit, going to Doctors today to get Champix, very apprehensive don't want to be a failure.  I am over 50 years old and smoked since I was 16, been a smoker all my adult life.  I need to quit for my health, normal every day things in life now make me puffed and the I wheeze I have to stop think and what is that noise and then realise it's my breathing (not good).  I am worried that by stopping it will change me, change what I do who I socalise with, has anyone any suggestions and how did your smoking partners, friends and collegues actually cope with you not smoking

Hi Coralie, I loved reading your post. 50 is a good age to quit as any age is. 2 days ago I was being wheeled into an operating theatre for minor surgery. The Prep nurse said to me "Oh you smoke 50 a day, how old are you? 47 I replied. "Oh Pauly, you are so young, if you were 90 years old I would say keep smoking. Coralie, I then was given my general and went to sleep. I obviously woke up(Well derr) That same nurse was beside me when I recovered and said to me. "Paul! at your young age your lungs will improve" I just looked at her and realised that what she said was true..............

Sometimes it takes a complete stranger for us to realise our true feelings.

hi coralie i gave up smoking last november after i had a heart attack. i thought a heart attack was bad but its nothing compared to a stroke. my mother just before easter had a massive stroke and was in hospital for 2 months, and only this week we had to put her in a nursing home, she will probably never walk again , at the moment she still cannot eat or drink because her swallowing is affected and she may choke. also the brain damage from the stroke has caused her to have dementia. my mother smoked most of her life and at the age of 72 she is left dissabled not being able to do anything for herself.it not only has destroyed her life but it also has devistated my brother and i , so coralie do yourself a favor and your family and stop now.

Hi, congrats on deciding to quit, I'm smoke free for 4 days now and am on 14 day of champix

I am really happy with champix, I think it's well with ago to see if it's right for you, just make sure you take it with food or you will vomit it strait back up, as for being around other smokers I am staying away as much as I can in my own little world for as long as it takes till I feel strong enough, you can do it! Be strong and remember only you can do this.
