Knowing what to expect can help you stay in control. With a plan and the right support, you can get through it.

What causes withdrawal symptoms

Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco. It causes the brain to release a chemical called dopamine, which makes you feel good. Over time, your brain starts to link that good feeling with smoking.

Using quitting aids like nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or prescribed medication, along with support from a Quitline counsellor or your doctor, can help make things easier.
