Understand the guidelines for using our site and services to support your quit journey.
The Cancer Institute NSW (the Institute), an agency within the NSW Government, operates the iCanQuit website ("Website").
Operation of these terms of use
By using the Website, you agree to follow these Terms of Use (“Terms”). These Terms form a legally binding agreement between you and the Institute.
These Terms cover:
- Who can register
- Submitting and updating your registration information
- How to cancel your registration
- What kind of content is allowed
- How to report or remove content
- Who owns the content you submit
- How we use the content you submit
- Limits to our responsibility
- Your privacy
If you don’t follow these Terms, your account could be suspended or closed.

Eligibility for registration
If you are under 16 years old, you should have your parent or legal guardian’s consent to register for the Website. The Institute is not liable for any costs or liabilities incurred by a parent or legal guardian in connection with your registration.
Acceptable content
While using the Website, you may input text (such as for goal-setting, community discussions or personal tracking). You must not submit any content that is:
- Discriminatory, offensive, violent, defamatory, obscene, or otherwise inappropriate
- Promoting, encouraging, or normalising smoking, vaping, tobacco, or nicotine use.
- Infringing on another person’s copyright or intellectual property.
- Promoting products, services, external websites, or apps unrelated to quitting smoking.
The Institute reserves the right to remove any content that breaches these Terms, at its sole discretion.
Registration and account management
Submitting and updating your registration information
After submitting your registration, you will usually be able to access the Website immediately.
You can request to correct, update or delete your details via prevention@cancer.nsw.gov.au.
Cancelling your registration
If you no longer wish to use the Website, you may request to delete your registration at any time via prevention@cancer.nsw.gov.au.
Reporting and removing content
If you believe any content breaches these Terms, you may submit a complaint to prevention@cancer.nsw.gov.au. Reports are reviewed during regular business hours, and content will be assessed on the next business day if reported outside of these hours.
User Responsibilities
By using the Website, you confirm that:
- All information you provide is accurate and up to date.
- Any content you submit is your original work and does not infringe on anyone else's rights.
- Your content does not contain harmful software, viruses, or malicious code.
- Your content does not contain defamatory or offensive material or violate any laws.
- You indemnify the Institute against any claims, losses, or legal action resulting from your use of the Website.
Content ownership and use
Who Owns the Content You Submit
You retain ownership of any content you submit to the Website. However, by submitting content, you grant the Institute a licence to anonymously use, reproduce, and/or display the content within the Website and related promotional materials.
How We Use Your Submitted Content
By submitting content, you grant the Institute an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free license to use your content for Website operation, research, and non-commercial government purposes. This may include reproducing your content on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
Liability and disclaimers
Exclusions and limitations of liability
Except for liability that cannot be excluded by law, the Institute and its officers, employees, and agents exclude all liability for any injury, loss, or damage, including direct, indirect, or consequential loss, arising from the use of the Website. This includes but is not limited to:
- Technical issues or service interruptions
- Unauthorised access, security breaches, or third-party interference
- Loss of data due to circumstances beyond the Institute’s control
Registration cancellation and account termination
Your registration may be cancelled if you:
- Fail to complete all mandatory registration details
- Violate these Terms
- Misuse the Website in any way
The Institute reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access at its sole discretion.
Governing Law
These Terms and your use of the Website are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia. You agree to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales.
Privacy
The Institute strongly recommends that you do not share any personal information that others may see - take care in selecting your profile image, your nickname and when you make any forum posts or comments.
