Flow and Observe

Hi, as mentioned in a previous post, i started on patches and was off and on smokes for about 6 months. Once i decided that this is it I am not having another smoke this is what I did and this was my attitude. My attitude was simple, I knew I needed the patches mainly to take the edge off both cravings and withdrawal and my new attitude was i will not replace smoking with anything else, i will have to just live with what abstaining brings. I also told myself that i am not going to fight with it either, instead I will welcome, let the cravings flow and observe whilst waiting for them to pass, i also did drink a lot of water the first couple of months. When I found myself bored which was a lot because i wasn't having 20 or so 5 min smoking breaks i would research all quitting related topics on phone or desktop, i found myself watching you tube videos on quitting and also on addiction in general, this kept my mind on the job sought of motivating. I found topics that explained the cigarette delivery system and the patch delivery system very interesting which was helpful, I had a diary to express how I felt and I also wrote all of my theories about nicotine receptors ect... By choosing to do it this way I soon got used to cravings, withdrawal and sometimes i felt a little flat but the voice in my head told it's the little victories that lead to the big ones. Having a flat mood never lasted too long because each craving that flowed then observed then passed was victory in my eyes, after a few months i actually was enjoying this quitting period. Because I chose to use patches i considered my self officially free after around 6 months, I used patches for 9 weeks and another 3-6 weeks no nicotine at all. 21 months free. I wrote this because if it helps 1 person its worth my time writing it, my method, it worked great for me.

    Hi Leonora, its great that you are trying to quit, if i could pass anything on to you it is to keep trying, it does get easier. Its a great idea to talk to your doctor and use him/her as a support and if you find this site helpful i would like to encourage you to keep reading what others have done or what they are doing. I found every piece of information can be helpful. It is good to communicate with people who are trying to achieve the same goal. Those adverts on television "never give up on giving up" are very true. I took it a craving at a time, i found as i became more able to deal with them, they began to lessen. Keep trying, you can do it.

    Thank you for your post Flow and Observe I am on day 5 and am also using patches I was not sure how long to use them for but my down fall previously was coming off the patches after only a couple of weeks thinking I have beat this Am seeing my doctor tomorrow as have insomnia and also for some positive advice as he has been telling me to quit for quite a while as I have COPD and recently saw a lung specialist which wasn't great news I have made a list of the pros and cons and really there are no pros so am focusing on the cons which is helping me stay on track The cravings are really strong at the moment but my mind set is stronger I keep telling myself I can do this

    Knowledge and constant motivation every day is one of the keys to quitting, our motivation is built by working through everything literally in our own way, whilst staying close to the forum. My own quit was similar to yours.

    Thanks for giving anyone who is going through this process the will to succeed and just as important the happiness you feel when you are achieving your own goals step by step. Well done

    Congratulations on your success and thank you for taking the time to help others. All experiences give guidance and encouragement to the ones also desiring their freedom. Everyone is different. Find information and make your plan, then stick with it. A clear goal and a positive attitude are paramount.
