Day one towards a smoke free life after being a smoker for 26 years and numerous attempts to quit! I have started on patches this morning and so far have had to ditch the morning coffee for tea because I always had my coffee with a cigarette to start the day. I plan to keep busy at work today although I am feeling as though I have forgotten something or am missing something.....scary to think how much smoking has controlled my life. I have been reading other stories and am thankful for a site like this one. I have planned my day so I keep busy and will be out walking tonight after work instead of having a smoke as soon as I get home. goes ;)

Ha! NowaNonSmoker I am loving the 'giving a bird' scenario in your head ;)

Remember that you aren't giving up anything - yo are getting your real life back. Every time you have a craving say to yourself with a smile on your face - yaay I'm a non-smoker - positive reinforcement goes a long way. Don't beat yourself up - it's not really you that wants the smoke it's the nicotine monsters in your head that want them. Give them a "na na nana na" when they surface. I gave mine a mental "bird" every time which made me laugh, which made me feel good about quitting. Go for it!!

Day one passed with Success!! Thanks folks for all your kind words of encouragement, I am enjoying reading these emails throughout my day its just that little extra push I think we all need. The patches are really helping re: the cravings and I still slept well last night.

Hi BJN Hang in there each day is a bonus!Reward yourself I brought lots of clothes. Count back from 10 slowly with each craving, eat whatever you want for the first couple of weeks, sugar free lollies are great, and I cleaned a lot. Also sewed, knitted, did suduku! I had so much time ! All this will change and adjust as you get used to the fact that you are now a non smoker. Write out the reasons why you needed to quit and visit them often! Read others stories we are all human. As time goes on inspire others as well!! We are on this journey together!1

Welcome bjn...yep walking does it for me (when my broom is having a well deserved rest) does reminding myself of how great I smell...(I am really into that)...

Stay in touch and let us know how you are travelling...the road can get a bit bumpy (and avoid the banana skins..) but we are all here for you, and going through the same journey...just some of us are ahead of you on the path...but not that far ahead that we can't look behind to help those who are straggling...

Hugs to you...remember to take care of are an important part of this wonderful universe...

Good Luck bjn. I am sure you will be able to do it as you have a plan and you seem committed. I have found on my journey, the strength in the mind is the most important thing, Keep strong and go hard! :)

Best of luck bjn, you can do it!!! You have done the right thing about ditching your morning coffee. I had to do the same thing. I had to totally change my daily routines around so I wasn't tempted at certain times to go and have a smoke. Drink lot's of water and have some mints or fruit handy when you get a craving as it helps. Walking is great as well. This site will really help you. Great people on here with lot's of great advice and support to offer. Keep us posted on how you go:)

Welcome bjn. As you know it's not an easy ride. One thing I have discovered is that those previous failed attempts give us an understanding of our weak points, so we can better recognise them when the going gets tough and be prepared for them. Good luck!
