How I'm staying quit for the last 20 months

I was like you - struggling with smoking. Even though I knew it was a harmful habit that was killing me little by little, I just couldn't quit.

Now, I didn't have any sort of spiritual revelation. I read the book Atomic Habits by James Clear and it helped me to understand how habits work, and so I started.

I began by filling my life with positive habits such as working out a little every day, reading just a couple of minutes, meditating 2 minutes and so on. I began doing them just a little bit of time every day, and then I began to increase the time gradually.

As a way to counter-attack my cravings for smoking, I got myself an e-cigarette. Which in addition to my positive habits, began to change my mindset.

I wanted to adopt the mindset of someone who is free from bad habits, someone who's a high achiever - and I began working towards building that identity.

That's how I have stayed quit for the last 20 minutes - by starting small and eventually scaling my habits. Now I work out 5 das a week 45-60 minutes every day, I can hold a meditation session for as long as 20 minutes and I read 30-45 minutes every day.

I can say, with confidence, that it has contributed a lot to resist the temptation from smoking, being vaping my last resort, and I have to say it's been quite effective.

I hope that my story helps you and inspires you all!

Yes, good habits become just as addictive as bad. I enjoy walking these days, where I once abhored any exercise. I felt retirement gave me the right to do nothing. Not a good idea. Keeping active gives me more energy and positive feelings. Same as quitting smoking. Life as a non-smoker and doing more for yourself brings great rewards and happiness.
