Stopping before it becomes long-term

Hi there, I joined the ICanQuit forum just today. I quit about 86 days ago so coming up on 3 months. I had been smoking for about 8 months, 3-5 cigarettes a day. So far its been pretty good. For the first few weeks I had nasal congestion and a wet cough which was no surprise given I had experienced that before on an earlier quitting streak. Went to the doctor and they said I had post-nasal drip (after quitting) but everything else was ok just had to not get back on the cigarettes and she commended me on nipping in the butt before it became a long term dependency. Granted I haven't been smoking long relative to many others I have read on countless forums, however, I think the addictive side of cigarettes is no joke, and I can definitely see why it's so difficult to quit.

Regardless the second month was tough, anxiety over my health and a hacking wet cough during the day (thankfully not in the morning or at night). This lasted until I took some antihistamine nasal spray and tablets which helped cut the cough right down (but not out) as well as the nasal congestion. Was beginning to think it was allergies, but it helped with the nasal-drip.

Regardless, month 3 has overall has been an easier ride than previous months. For the most part I think its just the anxiety of not just being able to bounce back within 2-3 weeks before I started smoking. Now its just a dry cough through the day, a tickling throat, and some light chest congestion.

My father has been very supportive as he is an ex-smoker and smoked for a few years before giving it up in his 20's, so its been good to hear how he dealt with cigarettes.

I'm 22 and going strong. Just hope the dry cough and congestion will stop sooner. Will be heading to the doctors for another check up hopefully in about a months time, and hopefully by then I'll be past it all.

Cheers.

Welcome yeah you smoked about the same as what i did per day. I too have had nasal issues but your still young and have many years to quit. It's good also that youve had support from your dad as you can ask advice on quitting etc from him. Keep up with the doctor check up's and try to stay away from cigarettes and you should be ok

Hi Webquit,

Cheers thanks for the encouragement. Yeah the nasal congestion is a bummer. Honestly it's hard to imagine quitting being super difficult, let alone having congestion and a cough after putting down the cigarettes. How was your recovery after you quit? Bit of a cough for a while?

Cheers.
