Hi from London, I am now 30 days free from smoke and although i really proub of myself as ive been smoking for 33 years i have a cough that i can not shake. Ive read that it is my body removing the toxins from my body but how long does this last?? it is ruining my social life as i dont want to be out coughing and spitting out phlegm (sorry for being graphic) sometimes the cough is so vigarous that i throw up. i went to my doctors and he gave me some steriods to squirt up my nose so that it does not get blocked. it hasnt worked much so im going back to the doctors at the end of the month. I was wondering if anyone else has got this symptom? I have to say that as down as this has got me there is no way i would EVER go back on cigarettes again....i felt like i was chain/slave to cigarettes. Whenever i thought of a holiday i would picture me at the beach with a cigarette or beside the pool. The excitement of going away was the fact that i could get duty frees. It is sooooo good to have a site like this so that we can encourage each other.

Hello Lorraine, welcome to this page and sharing your experience...and being very proud of quitting after 33 yrs, a great achievement.

I am from Queensland, Australia.

Not sure about your cough, maybe your body getting rid of all the toxins accumulated in your lungs.

If my memory serves me right, it was about a month of quitting that I didnt have the

barking, hacking cough of being a smoker, at times the coughing was like coughing your toenails up via your lungs thru to your throat., dont miss those days at all

Well done, on quitting.

It seems like people who already have breathing problems from allergies, asthma or COPD...when they quit smoking it's more difficult with the chronic coughing, post nasal, etc. I have all three breathing issues and after 4 months, I'm still having coughing fits and use a nebulizer to clear my lungs as needed. I quit drinking alcohol at the same time as quitting smoking. My body has lots of healing to do! I just take it one day at a time and look forward to feeling better each day :-) It's not easy...but I want to enjoy my life while I still can.

Thanks so much for your comments...still smoke free and my cough has got much better now. I can finally sleep through the night and not jump off a bus because im in coughing fits.

i have to admit though im a little breathless at the moment. A bit disappointed because i thought that as soon as i give up my lungs will get back to normal and i will be running a marathon in 3 months!!!! i suppose that with all these years of abuse my lungs are still upset and sulking. One Day at a time - i love your positive attitude and i really look forward when i can climb that hill like Rocky and do a dance and not be out of breath!! I gave up sugar and carbs when i gave up smoking. So far the only thing i have eaten since giving up is chicken and quiche! I am well proud of all of you!!! lets all keep up the good work!!!
