Hi All,
just wanting to let anyone that is interested know that Yes you can do this, Yes you can quit and have an awesome life after quitting the cigarettes. My husband and I had our last cigarettes Jan 5th 2014, nearly 20 months ago. I was quite a heavy smoker and my husband an extremely heavy smoker. We have not had a puff or the desire to have a cigarette at all. The first 4 months were the hardest we did it nearly cold turkey , just 9 days on patches and that's all. You need to want to quit and also have the perseverance to fight the urges and cravings. It gets easier as time goes by and looking back I cant believe I smoked for so long and hope to god my lungs can recover from the damage I know I have done. I can't believe how healthy I feel and how energetic I am . I am always getting compliments on how lovely my skin is looking and I know this is from the no smoking. We have saved over $20000.00 since quitting and have rewarded ourselves by having a few holidays and new furniture for our home. We have a new grand daughter and this is our reminder of wanting to live longer healthier lives and not ever wanting to smoke again. I always thought I wouldnt be able to go out and have a good time if I couldnt have my trusty cigarettes in hand to accompany me , but I have even better times out now I'm not a smoker. Good luck to trying to quit and just try to stay focused as there is light at the end of the tunnel and you will get to a stage where you don't even think about having a cigarette anymore. Life is worth living and definitely without the ciggies.

Wow I can't thank you enough. I really needed to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and the dark days won't last forever. I am 39 days smoke free and it is getting better ...slowly.
You must be so proud of yourselves and rightly so , it is a hard thing to do . Again thank you and well done :-)

Well done Lizzie 1 , 39 days is a great achievement. Every day that you wake up is another day of slowly getting through the hard ones. I truly hope you make it. I spent alot of days looking at people's stories when I first gave up and had some really dark hard days worrying I would be a failure and not get there and I know now I can say I am a NON smoker and proud.

Thank you for your story. I am only five days into this, after 35 years of smoking a packet a day. My greatest fear is that I will never be happy again so reading your story reassured me - although four months of these feelings seems a long way away! Nonetheless, it is wonderful to read your story and know that other people's stories assisted you.

Hi Fullofhope, great work getting to 5 days, yes it is hard. It is sooooo hard but it is soooo worth it. You will have some miserable days ahead of you but just keep busy or go to bed early just to keep your mind off of it all. You will be happy again but also feel healthy again. I had a persistant cough for so many years it was terrible. You could hear me coming from a mile away as I probably coughed every couple of minutes. After 2 weeks of not smoking my cough went and has not returned. I work in the hospitality industry and I am around smokers constantly and I made it , so you can. I have never ever been so proud of myself as I am right now . If you fall off the rails get straight back on there , you can do it . Good luck to you

Thanks so much Lolita - it really helps to have your encouragement and to read the words on this site Most of my friends are non-smokers so they do not really understand the challenges. It is great to have gotten through my first weekend.
