Day 15

Posted in Staying quit
schedule 12 Jul 2014

After smoking for at least 30 years,  the time has come to give it up as it is costing me way too much each week. I am on week 3 of Champix and for some reason l am starting to feel more nauseous and have terrible headaches as the day progresses. When l first went to the Dr for the script l was told of some of the side effects but was also told that they would subside. Im not sleeping and when l do l usually wake up within an hour of me going to sleep. The dreams l am having are just outright ridiculous. I have not had a smoke since day 5 of me starting the tablets. Out of habit on day 5 l woke up, lit up a smoke and put it out straight away. Has anybody got any sugggestions on what l can do about the nauseous and headaches.

Cherie, congratulations! You are doing great! I smoked for over 35 years so I understand how tough it is to quit. I too am using champix (day 54 smoke free) and I also experienced nausea and headaches and dreams too, but they are actually very entertaining :). The first trick is to take your pills with meals, that really helped me - and a lot of other people on this site. It seems to eliminate nausea. Also, by taking the second pill with your supper, several hours before bed, it helped with the dreams. I still dream but not nearly as crazy! I will admit that after a few weeks smoke free, I reduced my dosage to one pill a day, so 1 mg, instead of 2 a day. This was not recommended by a doctor, I just did it on my own and I feel totally like myself now and I am still smoke free. There have been moments I thought I would kill for a smoke, only when at a party and having drinks, but I got thru those times. The champix helps immensely but you will still need willpower to stay on the path. Do what is right for you, you are doing great! Keep at it!

Day 24 Smoke free for me. I am on the Champix and definitely take the tablet with your meal . I have had a few instances of nausea but it passes quickly. Stay upright after taking the tablet also. Constipation is a problem for me but I am taking senna to relieve that.

Kam you are 30 days ahead of me so I will ask you do you think we will ever stop thinking of cigarettes. I find it hardest at night when I am on the computer and after I have done my work. Then even though I am not hungry or shouldn't be I look for something to eat . I don't want to do that as I never used to eat between meals . I have tried sugar free gum but I end up with a sore jaw and feeling a bit sick. Any hints ?

Hi Evonny and Cherie. Evonny, I know exactly what you mean, we are looking for something to replace those smoking moments and need something to do with our hands and mouth, so naturally we start snacking. Like u, I have never been one to snack or over eat so, my replacement has become flavoured herbal teas, just trying every different flavour going! :) it's working for me, perhaps try and find something like that, or if u prefer something u can eat try celery or other veggies. And honestly, I don't know if the desire ever completely goes away! Sure hope so! You are doing great, keep up the battle! All the very best to you!

Hi Cherie 1965. Just to let you know I smoked for 39yrs and had never really tried to quit before now. I am on my last 2 wks of champix and can now say " smoke free". I also found in the beginning of taking champix, I found not many side effects. By week 3-4 wow! Nausea, headaches, constipation and frazzled nerves. At some point maybe week 11, I decided to just take 1 in the morning and not take the late dat pill. It has worked great for me....I feel human again! I still crave a smoke but hopefully I'm done for ever......saving a ton of cash too. Good luck!
