Starting on Champix

Today was the first day that I started on my smoke free journey... well sort of... I finally got my script filled and took my first tablet this morning. I made sure that I had it with something to eat (I made sure it was something heavy) as I had heard that taking Champix can make you feel nauseous. I was also pretty damn excited that as a part of this treatment I can still continue to smoke for the first few days, so I didn't feel as though I was in a do or die situation. 

I have to admit though, during the first half of the day when I did have a smoke it didn't feel the same if that makes sense. So, overall today I noticed that I actually smoked less then what I normally would do. So this has made me very excited to see what will happen over the course of the next few days. Especially when I reach my stop day which is Sat 5th (first day of school holidays). Still though, I am pretty excited at the prospect of being a non-smoker.

I am interested though if I will experience any side-effect with this medication. I noticed this afternoon I had a horrible headache, but I am putting that down to lack of water and too much time at the computer screen whilst I complete uni work. Also, I will be interested if it effects my sleeping habits (but considering I have assignments due, maybe for the short time that won't be a bad thing)! Anyways day one done....

Good luck with your cutting down and quitting. Make sure you drink lots of water through this change, it is important as your body detoxifies all the chemicals you have been putting in by smoking.

Hi kkvic, I stopped on Champix - Im 267 days smoke free after 30+ yrs of smoking. The nausea can be eased with dry biscuits and loads of water. My disturbed sleeping pattern/ vivid dreams only lasted for a week. Headaches also disappeared after a week or so. Make sure you always have water with you. I had a habit of smoking in my car and I replaced it with drinking water. Exercising also helps a lot with keeping the cravings at bay.

Good Luck and hang in there. Its totally worth it not smoking.

Thanks everyone for your kind words of encouragement. Jaydeeluck7, good luck tomorrow. You will be able to do this! Day two has been a great day (even without the sleep). I have to admit that I am starting to feel the actual urge of wanting a smoke slowly fade away. Particularly in the morning when I have taken the first tablet. So I am really excited to move forward with this program and see how my body reacts when I start taking two tablets. I think the only hurdle for me on this program is just trying to get my mind out of the habit of smoking (i.e. when I am on break at work, light up). But you know what, when I read other inspirational stories like yourself Mix I know that I can do it as well =).

Mix, 267 days smoke free... what an achievement well done. Luckily for me at this stage I haven't experienced any nausea, but I am putting this down to ensuring that I make sure I have something in my stomach before taking the tablets. The only side-effect I have experienced has been the lack of sleep. Even today after approx 3'ish hours of sleep I feel wide awake. Like I had mentioned earlier, this may not be a bad thing whilst I'm in the middle of assignments and examines, but I am a little concerned when I start taking the second tablet.However, I feel that this will be only a short term issue, and is a small price to pay in order to be a non-smoker.

Thank you for the advice regarding the water, I'm lucky in one respect as I am one of those smokers who doesn't smoke in the car or house. But I will take my bottle of water everywhere I go now! Just a quick question, do you remember what day you were on when you stopped smoking on Champix?

Today was the first day that I have taken two tablets. I have to admit I was a little nervous at the prospect of increasing my dosage. As I mentioned in a previous post, I have been able to avoid the nauseous feeling that other’s using Champix may have experienced. I did this by ensuring that each morning before I took my tablet that I had a belly full of breakfast. Also, I tried to make sure that what I ate was a substantial or heavy meal. This method has worked really well over the last few days (much to mine and my stomach’s relief)! However, one side-effect that I have experienced has been insomnia. I admit that at the best of times I am someone who can function normally with minimal sleep (or fight the feeling of tiredness), particularly when I have assignments due. But, on my first night of taking these tablets I was buzzing around like a bee still into the very early hours of the evening (3:30-4:00am’ish). The next night however, I did sleep better, only to experience the same restlessness, and sleep deprivation the following night. Hence, why I have been slightly worried about increasing my dosage… who knows how I’ll be feeling later on tonight. Still though, the goal of becoming a non-smoker (I believe) will be worth the small sacrifices that I make now (in the short term).

Other than the insomnia, I feel quite lucky that I have not had any of the other side-effect symptoms that others and the information leaflet have reported. My mood has stayed the same, in fact I might go as far as to say that has actually improved (or this could be the deliriousness talking), and my concentration span is still at an all-time procrastination level (in other words, I am putting off writing my next assignment by writing this)!!! In regards to smoking itself, at present I haven’t experienced much change at all. The little change I have experienced has been usually within the first hour/hour and a half after taking my tablet and lighting my cigarette. I know that I am smoking, but the actual emotional/physical feeling is (at times) not the same, or significantly decreased. The only part that feels the same is the physical action of taking a cigarette out of the packet, placing it into my mouth and lighting it, and smoking it etc. So based on my experience over the last couple of days, I am quite excited in finding out what awaits me over the next few weeks of my treatment. Also, I am feeling a bit more confident in my upcoming “quit day”. I know that I have the tools to succeed, it’ll just be a matter of putting them to good use, and mixing in a little of determination, and a dash of courage. Anyways, thank you to all who have written a reply to my previous posts. You’re kind words of support, and own success stories really do help inspire and motivate me in continuing on this journey.
