Wow, this is interesting, as for the last month I've been battling an allergy that has manifested by a hive like rash on face & neck. Taking prednisone stops it & wham within a week it's back. Never been allergic before, & stopped smoking 17wks ago after over 40yrs. Can you (anniepercy) describe what you discovered in your research please. They don't tell you about these health issues on the 'Stop Smoking' bandwagon.

I agree that the fact that developing allergies after quitting should be discussed by people who are helping others to quit smoking. I used to live in St. Louis, one of the areas of the U.S. that was notorious for allergies caused by pollen and mold. My wife, who grew up there, had allergies so severe that she lost her sense of smell and taste. (Something that I thought was terrible at the time but became a source of private amusement after the divorce.). I never had the slightest problem with allergies or sinuses while we lived there. After I quit smoking I started having trouble with my vision, which I blamed on my new brand of contact lenses that my optometrist had prescribed. However, as time passed and I began to suffer from other classic symptoms I realized that after all of these years I was suffering from allergies. After some research I found articles on the study in Sweden that linked quitting to allergies. I must say that despite the significance of the study it seems to have been relegated to obscurity and there has been little discussion of it in the general news media. Although this may be an attempt to avoid giving smokers a reason not to quit, it also leaves those of us who develop allergies after we quit smoking in the dark about potential consequences. I would have gladly suffered the allergy symptoms to quit the habit if I had known but a heads up on possible consequences would have been useful and appreciated.

I too faced allergies and coughing a few months after I quit. It continued on for around three months and then went away. This was during the fall season. The next year, i again got some allergies around fall, but this time it was milder and lasted only a few weeks. After that, I never got that sort of allergies. So your body does heal and adapt to your non-smoking ways. The allergies and coughing were very mild compared to the benefits of not smoking for me. Just hang in there... it is not a permanent deal!
