One week down!

Hi everyone. I have managed my first week of not smoking! This is the longest time I have ever been nicotine free in 15 years and my easiest quit to date. Physically I feel terrible. I have been coughing so much that my body aches and this has kept me from sleeping so I'm exhausted but my skin looks great and my hair smells nice for a change. I am beginning to actually have a sense of smell now and the slight yellow stain on my smoking fingers is completely gone, I had my teeth cleaned at the dentist and she said there was a lot of tar on the back of them to be removed which really turned me off. I've spent most of my quit time at home so far and don't usually think about smoking. My triggers seem to catch me when I'm out, dehydrated, hungry or too tired. I read somewhere that when we end up in a situation that triggers a crave its because the neurons in our brain have made a pathway which defaults to crave nicotine and every time we experience a crave moment and succeed a new pathway is created in our mind, so the next time the situation arises we don't automatically want a cigarette. Reading about the addiction and illnesses associated with smoking has been on of my biggest helps in trying to stay out of denial.

Hi Tara88 our addiction is nicotine. The brain asks for more now and then to keep us happy. This is why we get cravens. However these cravings do subside immensely after say 2 weeks if quitting and nrt liozenges have helped me tremendously into my 17th day of quitting and the cravens have also subsided a great degree. Remember this quote "Feel the emotions and beauty of a brain responding to life instead of nicotine" Good luck and soldier on.

Well done to you! I'm a huge believer in being educated about things like this as it helps to understand what is going on and why you're feeling the way you do. Understanding when you are at your weakest is very powerful as you can have plans in place in advance. Nice work..
