Doing my head in

I have been smoking on and off for approximately 25 years and really want to quit .
i need to quit for my mind set really everytime I have a health issue I worry myself sick that I have chronic broncitis or lung cancer and cannot focus on anything else
the sad part is that I only smoke about 5 to 8 cigarettes per day but I sneak them in as I am so ashamed that to admit that I do smoke
it's killing me mentally and I am losing my family as I am becoming quite depressed and the more I worry the more I smoke
i tried giving up but end up with terrible back and chest pain and lots of mucus and start smoking again
Anyone have any advice for me
Von

Sorry you are struggling. I think you have to really want to be a non-smoker. It sounds like you are torturing yourself with your thoughts, and I understand the feelings of shame. It might help to think about how proud of yourself you will feel within just a few days of stopping. How amazing it will be to feel that you are in control and no longer controlled by smoking. That's within just a week or two, so not long at all. The short term feelings you've suffered with in the past won't last long and then you will be healthy and free. It'll be worth it. Good luck!

Hi Von,
Im 20 days short of my 1st year and I can give you my word its totally worth it! I stopped on Champix but I was hit with a load of side effects but still stuck to my 3month course. I smoked for 30+yrs +- 20 per day.
My advice, if you really want to stop and it will take all your negative emotions away - get some gum/ patches or Champix to make your journey easier. Replace smoking with drinking water, avoid all triggers that might make you feel like smoking. If possible start exercising even if its only walking.
Not smoking is the best decision I've made for myself and my health.
Good Luck - please keep us up to date.

Oh Von I feel so bad for you, you are torturing yourself with this. I understand the shame, I hid smoking from almost everyone for years and it made me so stressful worrying about being caught or planning when I could have my next smoke. The only way you will feel better, physically and emotionally is if you quit. You have to do this for yourself and you have to really want to. Smoking is not a crutch, it won't make you feel better, but quitting will make you feel great! Yes it's a struggle but use something to help you. Champix is working great for me, but it might not be right for you if you are depressed, talk to your doctor to determine what the best method is for you, then do a little count down to your quit date and off you go. It will be tough but we are all here to help cheer you on!

I suffer panic attacks where I think I'm going to die. I get a sore chest and I think I'm having a heart attack. I've never actually had a heart attack and I'm alive today! It's just panic...
What I know is quitting improves health. cigi's KILL us. It's your life. You may get some initial bad symptoms but they will surely pass.
That bronchitis sucks bad but it is better than terminal illness.
I don't want to spend my last days on earth in a hospital addicted to cigi's. That is one of my reasons for quitting.
