first hour of quiting

im 31 and for the last week everynight when i go to bed as im tring to sleep i stop breathing just for a second they think its panic attacks i dont im a fairly happy person who dosnt panic ever i think its my smoking :( i am a mother of 6 kids 4 boys 2 girls and a step mum to 2 boys and 1 girl. so i have decided just after opening a brand new packet of smokes it now or never. i had my last smoke 15 minutes ago, guess im looking for anyone out there who could share what is working for them i hid the coffee so i wont be tempted to have a coffee and smoke and im choosing not to drink coke while im quiting so if anyone has some tips on what helps that would be great thanks for listening

princessjade I think one of the best tips is to drink lots of water I have found it helps and also try snacking on carrot and celery sticks that keeps your hands busy. I am also taking Champix as was a 40 a day smoker... I am now only having maybe 3 but they taste gross so I usually end up putting them out. Good luck and you can do it :)

Hi princessjade, I'm not a doctor but I think what your describing sounds more like anxiety, it is the type of condition that anyone can experience at anytime, often related to stress and is commonly associated with smoking. Stopping smoking usually is quite challenging and stressful and as you know raising children can be also(I have kids too ;). I smoked for 20+ years and have stopped and started many times. I too had a health scare which encouraged me to stop and it has been 7 months since my last cigarette. I strongly encourage the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)eg patches, gum, mini lozenges, Hypnotherapy etc to help break the physical connection to the cigarettes. (Patches are available on the PBS via your GP). I have no personal experience with champix so I cant give you an informed opinion on that option (Google).
You are 100% correct in removing all of the triggers such as caffeine, alcohol, smokers and stressful situations as much as possible (easier said than done sometimes I realize)
I sincerely wish you well and trust you will have all the strength, courage, and willpower you will require on your path to becoming a non smoker :)

Good on you for making this important decision for yourself and your children. Be prepared for the next few days of withdrawal, not only from Nicotine but from the Caffiene in the coffee and coke. Drink lots of water, take some vitamin B complex and have your headache tablets handy.
Do not forget that this phase will pass and be just a memory in a few weeks.

good on you for taking the first step!!
im with you.. its hard and tips from others seem to help :-)
for me the best way is to use nicobate gum.. im breastfeeding at the moment and they say patches are no good while breastfeeding.. im having a gum straight after a feed that way hopefully its out before the next feed.
so many ppl say to me the gum makes them sick.. im thinking they are doing it wrong.. you take one.. chew on it 2 or 3 times then put it under your top gum.. every few minutes chew again for a sec .. it has got me through the last 5 days!!
i wish you the best of luck and hope you can succeed as you have a family of littlies depending on you :-)

Your a star for taking the first step.
I'm 198 days smoke free. I quit cold turkey however that may not suit you. Like others have posted, remove all temptations and drink lots of water.
When things get tough remember why you need to quit.
Good luck

You could get some headaches. You might also get hungry. They are right, sip water, snack on vegetables. Make sure your having a couple of fruit serves each day. Break your day down into parts. Do some breathing exercises like meditation. I stop breathing too. That is part of the reason I am quitting right now.
