mental preparation - any help please?

Posted in Reasons to quit

Hi. I'm Catherine. I had a lung cancer scare and found it easy to quit for a month in late May. I was devastated at the thought of having lung cancer. I used patches and hardly got any cravings. Since I was over-confident and stopped using the patches, I have gone back down the slippery slope. I am on Champix now and am going to start the patches today. Tomorrow is my quit date. But I feel that I am not mentally prepared. Does anyone have any tips about how to get your confidence back, please. Thanks in advance, Catherine

Hi Catherine,

You're on Champix now and starting patches tomorrow? I just want you to know you cannot use both of them together at once.

As for tips there's heaps on here if you read through the stories. I would just keep remembering the lung cancer scare everytime you think about reaching for a ciggy.

Goodluck and stay strong :)

Hi, Sally. Thanks a lot. About the patches, I actually called Quitline before I bought them and they said I could use them with the Champix. I had a long chat with the lady on Quitline and she said it was OK to use both together.

Hi, guys. My doctor knows I'm taking Champix and using patches, but thanks for your concern. Plan at the moment is to cut down not quit outright for the time being. Thanks a lot, Catherine

Hi inverted

Hope the non smoking is going well.

I stoped about 6mths ago just on patches and heaps of mints :)

Did find it hard and had 1 puff about 2 weeks in (tasted horrible by the way) and put it out.

1 thing I did find is I have a packet of smokes and lighter put away in a draw, really just to know they are there and that helped me.

As for the patches I have only just stopped using them (6mths later) so for me I just forgot to put them on,

So really its just a point of finding your thing that helps you no matter what it is or how long it takes

Hope that helps abit and good luck keep going.

p.s

by the way I was told i had mild-moderate emphsymia that was the only reson I stopped smoking

well here you are best Tip is cut out the self pity . Just remember what I said the last time It is JUST ONE DAY AT A TIME thats all you can do I did Champix found they worked for me but sometime I think that they are only a crutch a lot depends on the person them self if you wish to stop and you have a big enough reason being Health Wealth to look at one's new self in the mirror smell your own breath The best thing i like is to stand outside a bakery smelling the fresh bread just out oven or sit on beach smell the sea .hope to hear from you soon i know my opening remark may be hard but if it makes you think well all the better JUST ONE DAY AT A TIME thats all you can do MIRACLES TAKE TWO DAYS all the best

Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking has helped me. It explains the nature of the nicotine addiction - so you know what you are fighting. It offers some mental techniques to use while quitting - so you have some weapons to defend yourself from cravings and relapses. It costs about the same as one pack of fags. It is not a magic wand. I still found it very hard and certainly not easy. But after a packet a day for 40 years I am 10 days smoke free and feeling cautiously confident. Allen Carr and this website have helped me a lot.
