cigars

I am 71 years old and a doctor. I started smoking cigarettes at about age 11. I smoked a pack a day from about age 20 to age 58 , when I quit cold turkey. I stayed quit for about 5 years, until a friend had a baby and gave me a cigar as a celebration. I smoked that and continued with occasional cigars, gradually becoming less occasional and more frequent. They were expensive though, until I discovered Dutch Master President cigars. They are cheap, small cigars that last about 20-30 mins and cost only $7US/pack of 5. I now smoke a pack of 5 daily and can really feel the effect on my lungs. If I don't quit, I may not be able to walk within a year or so from lack of lung function. I know all the risks of smoking , including many which are not well known to the general public, but my addiction has been too strong to avoid and stay off nicotine. I guess I'm just stupid. I am really going to give my bestr effort now to quitting cold turkey

Listen to the man above. He gets it. Don't make it something you can't have. Make sure it's something you never want again. Looking at cravings and withdrawal as a sickness...is genius. Because it will all pass and you will be WAYYYYYY better.

Hi Paid. Feel your pain and angst knowing that quitting is not easy. 1040 days ago I named my craving "Margret Thatcher". Took many expletives in the early days to fend her off. She also tried to make me reward myself at every time I reached any milestone. Many expletives later I am free. I found the idea of naming my craving from a post from another quitter. Had been looking for a way to quit for many months. This on was so logical. Each to their own. Was such a hoot to rock up at golf and announce to my friends that I was going to be quit. Cold turkey. Clean slate. No grey areas. No cutting down. No substitutes. No hallucinatory drugs. I am so thankful to have such determination to fight Margaret and the cravings. Wish you well.

Thank you all for your support. The cigars I smoke are probably each equivalent to about 5 cigarettes, I think. So, I'm at about 25 cigarettes/ day. I am now cutting down , only had 4 yesterday and today. Quit day is 8 days away, so tomorrow and Sat. I plan on 3. I'm beginning to believe I mean it this time. I plan on posting a lot as I know it helps stay committed.

Hi Paidi. Suggest you just bite the bullet and stop. There is no weaning yourself off the silly habit that will ultimately kill you. Just stop cold turkey. I too tried to reduce the number I smoked. I was kidding myself. I was still smoking. Then post all the reasons others may benefit from quitting. I did put the wind up my fellow quitters nearly 3 years ago when I presented them with research that showed only 4% would succeed. I have nor forgotten those words and am determined to go the distance... Look forward to a post from you hopefully with a message from someone who can enlighten us with more reasons to quit.
