I do need some tips I've only stopped smoking 13 days ago I have smoked for 30 years and been in hospital with pneumonia 3times in 2 years I'm finding it very hard to stop I have cravings several times a day I'm using patches and gum. I am trying to keep busy doing housework and gardening but still look for a cigarette when I'm doing this its so hard. My fear when I was in hospital was that when I started to feel well again I would want to smoke and that's what is happening. Any tips would be great.

It's not easy I'm 54 days in and I've one here or there nothing drastic, I was on the patches then after the first batch I started wearing one on one day, one off the next and then I worked it down to one day on two days off, after a few days I didn't wear any and I haven't craved a smoke at all, I think what's happening is your thinking about it, the desire and the habit of doing it constantly. I from time to time crave the inhale sensation rather than the nicotine but I watch a TV show and it will eventually subside, another thing you can look into is, if you're craving the habit of lighting up and just the autonomy of it, vaping is a good idea to do and it isn't harmful to your lungs like a smoke is, there's all kinds of flavours you can look into, also if patches and gum don't work for you, you can actually buy the liquid nicotine overseads in up to a litre (I think) that will last you a very, very long time. My friend quit via this method and she's now a year on.

Hi Bette,

Good on you for making the decision to quit, I am 29 days quit free and I loved my smokes, but I decided on the day I quit that I am not going to let cigarettes control my life I am going to take control which I did and I cannot believe I have finally done it after many times trying to quit. I am taking Champix and they are great the cravings are very little and when they do happen I have a glass of water. keep going Bette believe me each day you will feel much more confident because you are in control.

Hi Bette,

you mention that you would want to smoke as soon as you were feeling better from pneumonia.Try thinking of how you felt in hospital except this time you won't feel any better after you come out because you have just been told you have C.O.P.D.

I spent 8 days in hospital with breathing difficulties and was diagnosed with C.O.P.D on the 2 April 2016. I am 63 can't work and trying to live on a pension as once you get to that stage the damage is irreversible.

I have a saying "give up while its your decision don't wait until its your bodies decision"

Make health your top reason for quitting and stick to that.

All the best for the future.

Hi Bette,

Des has just given you personal experience advice. It's not easy but can be done and in time, we get better at it.

I've read many others on another site say not to think in the future whilst trying to quit. Take one day at a time and before you know it, you'll be celebrating your first milestone.
