Replacement for comfort

Posted in Quit experiences
schedule 1 Feb 2017

I am on day 20 without a cigarette. But after a long day at work I long to come home and smoke a cigarette for the comfort, to calm me,to relax me. I don't know how to fill that void.

Welcome to this page and sharing your story with us.

Well done on day 20, this is a great achievement and like all us that are going through the process of quitting..we are missing that smoke that gives us a great enjoyment

Sorry pressed before I finished.

You may need to change your routine and mindset when you come home to chill out after work..

You have created a habit in the way you relax,

Can you go for a walk, light gardening, just something to break that habit.

Hi Yesyoucan and welcome to the establishment. On day 20 you are doing well but still not out of the woods by a longshot. When i was around 20 days i was still heading outside every tv commercial add and my wife would say "where you off to"? Yes it is hard especially the habit....i find after 7mths the cravin gs are very very minimal , but the habit takes a while even though i do not head for the outdoors now. You need to stay strong and the moment of habit will pass as does the craving. I find i just have a coffee in the morning and watch the news or read the paper to break the initial one hour of my awakening where a smoke used to go hand in hand so to speak. So, yes we are on a very hard and long journey but need to perservere if we are serious not turn back when we run into problems. Good luck, keep posting and cheers.

Hi Yesyoucan. It will definitely get better but give time time. We all share your pain as we have walked the same path. The cravings will not kill you and will become an irritation just before they disappear.

The most natural thing for a smoker to do is smoke. What you are doing is changing that default mode to being a non or ex smoker.

I am now 514 days nicotine free and woke up feeling a bit sh***y and then remembered I have quit and the cravings have gone. It is a great gift you can give yourself and really it's just time and determination. Good luck

OK I'm less than a week in on my non-smoking campaign but I have discovered crystallised ginger, when you feel like a smoke, grab a chunk and take ages to eat it. The strong flavour kills off the craving. If you don't like ginger then try real licorice, or extra strength peppermints
