Nearly 18 months quit and feeling really grateful. Worth the pain and anxst of the first few months. Thanks to all those who helped me through the worst. And thanks to this forum. Cravings completely gone. New Gibson 335 guitar. Thousands saved. New self esteem. Clothes don't need washing so much. Cough gone. Blood pressure normal. 100% good doctors report after check up. Who wouldn't quit

This is my 122nd day smoke free!! Posting from Florida, USA. I have also been alcohol-free (wine) for the same number of days! I had been drinking and smoking heavily for 26 yr. or so trying to self-medicate after a painful divorce leaving me with severe depression and low self-esteem. On October 28, 2016, I overdosed on pain pills mixed with alcohol alcohol in an attempt to commit suicide. My new husband, fire -fighter, saved my life. I have been diagnosed as an alcoholic with major depressive disorder. I am now taking 3 anti-depressants along with medications to boost my system for iron, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, B12, and others. I also take medications for COPD, asthma, and allergies. I was very successful using the nicotine patch and quit on October 28, 2016. Since then, I am seeing my Primary Care Dr., a Psychiatrist, and a psychologist/therapist. The suicide attempt was not intentional until I abused the pills/alcohol. Cigarettes where a huge trigger for the alcohol and vice-versa, so I knew I had to quit using both at the same time. I've been "clean" now for 4 Months. I'm struggling with energy, stamina, constipation loss of weight, and poor appetite. However.....I am taking One-Day-At-A-Time! I am feeling a bit stronger each day and no longer suffer from he pain of anxiety and depression! I am 65 yrs. old and a retired teacher! Yet, I have never reached out for help until things got bad enough that the depression/alcohol/smoking literally almost killed me! "But for the grace of God, go I". Many people don't realize that the reason they continue with their addictions is because they are depressed! Please don't hesitate for one more day to reach out for the help you need! I have been blessed to find an nurturing bible-based recovery program, excellent doctors, and a supportive family! Thank you for reading all of this and May God Bless each of you and give you strength in Him. I look forward to your feedback on this wonderful site!

Hi onedayatatimeflorida Good luck with your double quit . I gave up smoking at after 53 years at age 67 and with the help of this forum have stayed quit for 18 months . You sound as though you have a lot on your plate with the alcohol problem and depression but my experience in life is that if you do he right things the right things will happen . You are right , of course, to take these issues one day at a time as we really want to put things right all in one go . If you have a faith that is really good and I am sure this will give you comfort on your journey . I am also a friend of Bill W and have been since 1978 when I had similar issues as yourself when I was a young man : Reading through the lines of other sharers here I am sure we are not alone although this is the ciggy forum . Good luck
