Weight gain...

Hi all,

Today is Day 66 for me and I honestly never thought I'd get this far but through sheer determination and strong will I have faith in me and the journey continues...

Forgive the following - I just need a rant...

But the weight gain!!! that I could do without. I was feeling a bit low over the past few days about this. I will have to move up a size in jeans now and I find this confronting because I have never weighed this much. I was pretty much the same size I had been for 20 years (I could even wear the same pants as I did in high school - I'm over 40 now) until I gave up smoking... now I feel it....

I don't eat junk non-stop. Rather, I prefer snacking on dried fruit, nuts and the OCCASSIONAL sweet. I drink water by the gallon as I have never been a fan of coke and soft drinks. I eat plenty of meat and fresh vegetables as I have always done.... Arghhhhh :o(

My partner says not to worry. He doesn't mind the little extra weight as he knows I'm healthier for not smoking - but still I feel like crap...

Lizzy posted a few days ago that "you can always lose weight but you cant lose a lung". I smiled when I read this - I needed to hear it.

Least the weather is warming. I'll start with walking first then move on to something a little more challenging. In my teens and early 20s I used to compete in martial arts. I was extremely fit and my body was very toned - but smoking took this away from me as I could no longer train as I was short of breath... maybe I'll get back into it...?

But one thing for sure I WILL NEVER SMOKE AGAIN weight or no weight - smoking is not an option!!!

Good luck all

Gooday Crasher, look do'nt worry about a little weight gain. I have always liked sweets and definitely will not give up my apple pies etc. We can always take the weight off with sensible diet and exercise...especially now weather getting hotter. I do a fair bit of walking especially up some grades; i find this really gives you a good blowout. However , no point in overdoing things.....you just do them in moderation. Good Luck. Cheers.

Thanks Johnnie, Its reassuring to know that Yes I can get the weight off too. I'm actually looking forward to being able to exercise again. I'm by no means a gym junkie but I do like the idea of a brisk walk now the weather is getting better. Thank you for the encouragement - it means a lot when I'm feeling a bit low...

Hey crasher, I'm feelin for you too :( day 90 here and nearly 10kg up. It's depressing and I feel almost as filthy as a skinny smoker.

But yeah we have to look on the bright side right, I'm trying hard with this struggle too. You are not alone ok x

Hey Bootsscooter, congrats on your 90days....however to gain 1kg approx every 9 days is a little too much. You need to consider what you eat and ensure that you have enough exercise to counter act your eating habits. Sorry to tell you but it would not be nice to quit smoking and create a problem elsewhere. After 107 days quit my weight has increased by 1 to 2kg which i keep under control with walks and fair inclines. Anyway just trying to help you. That is what we are here for. Cheers.

Hi crasher, it is really hard dealing with the weight gain, I know, especially being a woman but not being able to breathe is worse. The most loving thing we can do for ourselves is to stop smoking and stay a non smoker for life. It is normal to gain weight in the first year of quitting, but it then comes off and you will probably find you'll loose weight, because your exercising more! The most important thing to focus on now is to stay a non smoker, no matter what. I liked what you said about how fit you were when you were younger, and how you stopped because of cigarettes?,maybe you could do some of that again?, I am really I to Yoga, it's awesome for my mind, body and soul. Hang in there, you can do it 🤗

Go Gal, Do give up the dried fruit. Anything touched by human hands will have too much sodium, sucrose, fat or any other legal poison. Read the label or google search additives. Have an apple or an orange. I have put on the lbs but now have more time to get rid of them. I also know I will live longer & have more time to budge the bulge.

Thank you all, your kind thoughts and messages keep me positive and I'll deal with the weight later when the weather is better

Despite the few extra kilos I feel amazing by not smoking - this I just cant find the words for - but it is all sooooooo worth it :o)
