Side effects question?

I am a former smoker of 34 years. I am 49 years old and I had my last cigarette on February 12, 2016. I am so proud to say I am a "non-smoker". I have a question/concern and hope that someone can answer my query? For the past 3 weeks I have had a cough but am able to expel mucous from my lungs and nasal passages every morning. There is no colour to the mucous and is clear. The cough does not hinder my sleeping etc., it is more of an annoyance than anything. I find myself getting out of breath quite easily too. After climbing a flight of stairs or even just doing a simple task as watering my plants or weeding the garden can sometimes leave me out of breath. I recently attended the local hospital emergency because I could not get into see my regular doctor for a month and the doctor on call had chest xrays done. She said my chest was clear. She then proceeded to have me put on a mask and I was given a treatment of medicines (ventalin) which seemed to help my breathing for the duration of that day. I had the treatment done on June 28. I was diagnosed with seasonal asthma and given a prescription for an inhaler. I had discussed with the doctor that I had quit smoking in February and if this could be a side effect of quitting smoking. She congratulated me on my success for quitting but dismissed my question. My husband believes my symptoms do have everything with quitting. He quit in January and said that he had similar symptoms in March. I am able to take deeper breaths day by day and have only used my inhaler only when necessary which has only been twice since the 28th of June. Thanks for reading my little blurb and I look forward to your thoughts on this.

I am 104 days smoke free and smoked about as long as you around the same age and I have similar.

I am not a Dr so my 1st advice is use medication as prescribed as for Dr's ability's well they are human and don't know everything. just my experience. :)

for me I smoked for a long time and I did damage to think I didn't is having my head in the sand, the cough some mornings I try and get some stuff out what's happening for me is the healing process of a huge trauma one big crash that went on for over 30 years.

I want it better too NOW and I get very frustrated with ME and why wont I get better !!

but the reality is I am getting better it's just going to take time and yeah could be some asthma involved but logic would say 30+ years of smoking takes time to recover from.

we are the lucky ones we have a chance to heal so yeah might be hard but its a million times better than smoking on to the bitter end.

so hang in there do what you can to help lung function, exercise, food, vitamins, med's etc..

I think as addicts we want instant as we got from the smoke but its not like that for most things takes some time :(

well done to you both and keep marching we are on the right track now.

hi Kimberley, today I am smoke free 120 days, I also in the last three weeks or so struggle with my breathing after doing just about anything physical. I am not coughing but can have an issue with mucous. For me I think it is a combination of things but carrying extra weight is I think my biggest issue

I agree with IC, after what we did to our body, it is going to take a while, also follow your doctors advice take medication as directed.

congratulations on being smoke free for 5 months

hi kimberley my story is almost identical to yours. I am 49 and smoked for years. Lately i have been short of breath at the drop of a hat and have developed a constant pain in my left shoulder.

my doc referred me to have an echocardiogram . i had it today and get the results on the 25th; i have been quit for 147 days. i wish i never touched the cigs but you cant turn back time. Congrats to you and your husband.

My mucous is clear too. keep it up. johnboy;-)

Thank you to everyone sharing on this site! I have been amazed thus far that my body seems to have bounced back so quickly....maybe with only thirty-one days nicotine-free, I haven't even started yet.....oh well, I will continue to be nicotine-free, enjoy singing, biking, and banjo. Just for today! Nicotine free and proud! Nicotine-free and feeling good! Nicotine-free and flipping strong!
