Newbie to quitting

Well, on my 2nd day without any nicotin. I had been a 1 1/2 pk a day smoker for the last 40+ years. In November 2013, I started vaping and stopped using cigarettes. My journey started Tuesday when the doctor told me I had mild emphysema. I stopped cold turkey when I heard that news. Well, it turns out they were looking at the wrong report and I don't have emphysema (yahoo!). Still, it shook me up so bad that I decided that it was definitely time to quit.
I'm drinking a lot of water, chewing gum, walking, taking deep breaths, and anything else I can think of when the nicotine urge strikes. When that little voice tells me its okay to smoke only 1 cigarette, I just remind myself that I could be sporting one of those little oxygen tanks that those with emphysema carry around. I picture the tube under my nose and that seems to help me a lot!
Still a long way to go before I'm a non-smoker.

Steve that's fantastic that you completely switched to ecigs after so many years of smoking, I think you will do great going from that to nothing, you've done the hardest part already! And u can always use the nicotine free ecig if u r struggling, sometimes it's just something to do with your hands! Either way, all the very best to you!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm still going and am on my 5th day without any nicotin. The switch from cigarettes to ecigs was not intentional. I just wanted to try the ecigs and found that I liked them a lot better than cigarettes! Go figure.

I have had my last smoke this morning and decided to give it up. I cough my lungs out every morning and recently started feeling soooo nauseous from smoking. So I decided that's it. But I need help because knowing that I told myself to quit, now it's all I'm thinking of and just want to smoke. Well I don't and never want to again, but how do I handle cravings? I have been smoking for 23years, 20 cigs per day. Anyone with comments, tips or advise please???

YOU Are already a non smoker Steve, the moment you extinhuished that last cigarette, you became a happy non smoker!!!! Never doubt that

Jamilu, I suspect that the best method to quit depends on the individual. I'm on my 6th day and still no nicotin. When I feel the urge to smoke, I do something such as taking deep breaths or chewing gum or walking around the building or drinking water, etc. For me, the key is to do something to distract me from the cravings. As I mentioned in a previous post, when I hear that little voice telling me it's okay to smoke just one, I picture me carrying around an oxygen tank and that seems to work.
Hang in there and good luck! You've done the hard part - deciding to quit. The rest is just reminding yourself of why you decided to quit.

8 days without a cigarette or nicotine. In some ways, it is easier that it was but I still am craving the nicotine. I keep reminding myself of why I quit. I'm getting quite good at chewing gum!

Way to go Steve! Try drinking lots of water, I find it helps a lot. So does exercise. Keep up the battle and keep telling yourself you are a non-smoker!!

11 days and still counting! I can see my old habits starting to change. Instead of lighting up, sometimes I'll take a lap around the building that I'm in. Other times involves chewing gum or snacking. I can see myself as a nonsmoker.

I'm up to 37 days and still haven't fallen to temptation! I think I'm a nonsmoker! Still drink a lot of water, take a lot of laps and chew a lot of gum, but it beats the alternative. One thing that keeps me going is the thought that if I slip up, I'll have to go through withdrawal again - something that doesn't appeal to me.

73 days and going strong (I've had zero slipups)! So far, I've done it cold turkey. It gets easier to not smoke. Still drinking water, taking a lot of laps and chewing a lot of gum. I've also started eating bananas and apples when I feel the urge to smoke. I think I'm finished with cigarettes for good!
