Struggling to stay quit

Posted in Hints and tips
schedule 2 Dec 2016

I am really struggling to staying quit. I keep trying after a relapse of not smoking for 10 weeks, but I just can't seem to shake it. I'm not giving up on giving up though. Any words of advise or encouragement for a determined struggler.

Hi mickjc, just never give up. We are addicted to nicotine and being an addict, it is really hard to let go of something that you use to deal with feelings and life, but it's possible. Especially when you realize that what you think of as your friend, is actually a wolf in sheep's clothing and it's killing you! Cigarettes have no positive value to our lives, only what our addiction tells us they have, which is a lie. You can do this, I can do this, one hour at a time, one day at a time. Living is breathing in life, not toxic cigarette smoke.😎

Hey Mick, I don't know if I can offer any advice here because it's a mental game, as you know. We all go through stages of wanting one or falling victim to the cravings but it's about knowing that smoke is not gonna make anything any better.

I wish you luck..

Hi Mick. On this site it is not so much that you will get a text book answer, rather someone posting who is on the same page as you. You can support someone else and in return inspire that subscriber. That is what has helped me for 551 days. Just remember, once a smoker, always a smoker. Must be on guard 24/7. Not easy. It is doable...

Hi Mick, Its an addiction and a mind game.

Me, I have in my mind two boxes, a positive box for not smoking and the smoking box. Every couple of day, I realise that there are new arguments to put in the positive box. As an example, no stress when being invited to non smokers.. No stress, when no chewing gums in the bag and feeling ashamed of being smelly..

What I want to say- the arguments are very personal and are the once I only find out slowly, by not smoking... and funny enough, they are still popping up in my mind.. My idea would be that the box is filled more and more, so that the cravings are getting easier to overcome... Not sure if it works, I will tell you ... Good luck with the fight... !!

Hi Mick,

Mine & many others lives have been saved after reading the book, "Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking." Google & you'll also find a 1 hour session on youtube. I'd really like to see this information given free to all smokers.

Hi Mick, every hour without a cigarette is a victory. Shout Hurray and stand up and do a happy dance! It might sound silly but it will make you stronger to handle the next hour. Do deep breathing exercises...inhale slowly from your nose and exhale slowly from your nose. Do that 10 times in a row. Drink lots of water. Go for a walk. Nicotine is a powerful drug, but do you want to be a drug addict??? NO!!! Don't let it win. It will get easier. Stay the course my friend, you can beat this.
