Struggling a bit.

Not entirely sure why but today, day 9, has been my hardest so far. I've been using Nicabate mini lozenges in the lower strength, and they've been enough to fend off the cravings. I've found my most difficult time is when I first wake up, and think I'll go outside for coffee and a ?... Have the coffee and a lozenge and it works. But the damn things have given me a mouth full of ulcers, apparently a common side effect. I'm already cutting them down, but I don't want to change to another form of nicotine replacement when these are working. Anyone had a similar problem? I've rung Quitline for advice, bought some ulcer gel from a chemist, and got some probiotic type yogurt.

Hey Dottily, hang in there.
You've done the week going for two. Well done.
I've tried the lozenge and spray and can't use either, made me crook. Champix is working for me. Maybe try something else for health reasons, and not give yourself a chance or reason to make excuses to chuck out all the hard work. Don't go outside for your coffee or have it later in the day, breaking regular routines is helping me.
Stay focused. It's only a feeling and will pass.

Hi Dottily,
This road can be pretty rough at times, But you've just got to stay on it and not fall down and give in..Your going to have some pretty crappy days and yeap some-times a few days in a row where the cravings are insane and you want to cave in to make it stop, But your also going to have great days where you hardly think of smoking..Its all part of this journey..I use nicorette gum ( was on patches before and ran that course) so probably have 1 or 2 a day on average. If it stops you lighting up, then its working..
Anyway just take it one day a time and you'll be fine..Good luck and remember your not alone on this road xx

Oh Paddy thank you. I couldn't work out how to finish my long rambling post once I clicked on review. I had wanted to say that it was a discomfort, but I was focused on treating the ulcers, and finding out whether it would be a continuing side effect or one that will pass. On an extremely positive note I haven't even considered giving up the fight just because of a sore mouth, and feel heaps better now I've used the ulcer gel and managed to eat something.
I have had ulcers on my tongue since giving up smoking too. I am no on day 138 but I haven't used lozenges. I was on patches but have not had a patch for over a month now and just chew on sugar free lollies and guessed that was what was giving me the ulcers (that or I've been telling a lot of fibs .... lol) Anyway perhaps it is a side effect of NRT of any sort.
Keep up the good work.

Hi Gammy, you're so right. The last couple of days all I can think about is smoking. Not in a "I need a smoke" kind of way, but I'm beating this, I'm actually doing it, and resisting temptations and excuses. And I'm not going to feel bad if in ten years I still carry lozenges just in case I get a craving!

Hi Goonellabah2002, I bet you're right about it being a potential side effect of any NRT. Painful things but a small price to pay for overcoming temptations and cravings. And you are wonderful for getting to day 138!

Hey Dottily - I found those few days difficult - 8, 9 and 10. Didn't give in.
I'm using the patches but I don't get the nightmares some do.
Do get very vivid dreams which I actually quite like!
And I get a buzz from riding out a craving which I'm actually only getting at work when others go out.
Then come back absolutely stinking!!!

Hi Dottily, I have a container of mild peppermint(just cheap coles brand) & when the urge hits I just pop one & the best thing - no side effects.
cheers

i use ecigs and they do the trick for me. look at it like marathon training, you are training to be a non smoker and at some point you will go sh-t i am a non smoker now woohoo it is a great day and worth it.

Hi Dottily... just wondering how you went with the ulcers? Did they end up resolving or did they continue... my partner suffered from the same issue and went to the doctor and he was told to start up smoking again and wean off them as the ulcers are due to a lack of a protein that smokers get from cigarettes (non-smokers produce it normally). I think it was Lysine from memory. So I am interested in how you went.
