Blood sugar

I've just been reading an interereting article about blood sugar and how it is affected by nicotine. It is common that blood sugar plummets when you first quit. This can show in symptoms like headache, inability to concentrate, dizziness and cravings for something sweet. The stimulant effect of nicotine affects blood sugar levels. This is why smokings acts as an appetite suppressant. While nicotine acts almost immediately, eating food takes about 20 minutes to stabilise your blood sugar levels. By smoking our bodies have not had to release sugar as the nicotine does it for you. So our bodies have to re-learn this process. This is why it is important to eat at regular times during the day. Apparently it helps to drink fruit juice. I also have some Glucodin tablets which I will suck on during the day- instead of the mints I have used to try to freshen my breath from the horrible taste of smoking.

Hi Trianne, that's interesting about the blood sugar. I'm only 3 days smoke free after 40 years, and when I did the groceries today, I bought sweet things that I would never normally buy- it all makes sense now. Keep positive. Cheers
Good points there and as an alternative I have opted for the sugar free sweets.
