Well I have been working for myself now for 3 years and started to smoke when I started my self employment, I am an auditor and due to the long hours I work smoking became a "basic human requirement for me" work is stressful and the long hours does not help, majority of my peers also smoke so it is very difficult to maintain a position of stopping, is there others out there that has a similar predicament ?

It seems to me that you are looking for validation to continue smoking.

What makes you special?

We all had lives that evolved around smoking. We once thought as you do, and that smoking filled the boredom, made us fit in to society and calmed out anxieties. Well we were wrong on all counts, so then are you.

You are here presumeably to quit smoking. Be looking for reasons to quit rather than our approval to keep smoking.

You have to WANT to quit smoking to succeed. Read our stories and change your way of thinking.

I have friends who smoke at poker, I go out and talk to them while they get their fix.

I was a waitress, and most servers seem to smoke.

I needed a cigarette before I started anything and after I finished. Even as an excuse for a break inbetween.

I needed a cigarette to console me in sadness, celebrate with me in happiness, to ponder lifes questions, to calm me in stress.

Smoking is not a wonder drug.

Nicotine is a terrible addiction which makes us addicts.

Smoking is a habit that we became psychologically dependent on.

Smoking costs the earth, financially and health wise

Smoking took away our confidence

Smoking never gave us anything.

Wow guys not sure your posts were meant to be so harsh but reading was a little full on tbh. We need to accept where we are at before we can move towards change so I think it’s realistic to identify how we got into this pattern. I also think, as everyone states, that it gets easier the further down the road you are but in the early days it can be hard. I think it’s great to name the things we say to ourselves to justify maintaining a habit. Those triggers will always be there we just need to decide that our desire to quit is stronger

Hi Ruan, I have worked for myself before giving up the smokes, it doesn't really matter in what situation you are in, as in life you will need to change your lifestyle maybe due to health reasons, this is something that you need to work out for yourself, it takes a little bit more of a strategy along with other forms of diversion.

A useful thing for me to do, as in working outside was to put on a different cap for either work or play, either mentally or physically.. I would teach outside, and used the physical hat, but when I got home the mental cap would go on for either housework, or more homework.

I had quite a few caps, but this made it light hearted for me. Try it, along with diversion tactics you have picked up....The concern here is not to pick up that deadly cigarette.

The truth is the truth, like it or not. We all came here to quit smoking. We have had enough of making excuses for ourselves to continue the addiction for years. Are we doing a service by letting someone make it more difficult for themselves? I truly want to make it easier for all, especially for those who will be openminded. We have to think differently than before if we are to change. I needed to believe that I could quit smoking, and so instead of finding a way to reduce the ill effects of smoking as planned, I changed my mind and my life!
