Hi

Have been smoking only 2years.Started out as a rebellious act then turned into a coping mechanism. Now not feeling so great and want to stop but not finding it easy to stop. I have read the book Easy Way by Allan Carr. I understand the method but not sure why I don’t feel ready to Quit or i am just afraid to Quit.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi Nikki,

I think we all think smoking is easy quitting is hard. I just stopped smoking 2 weeks today cold turkey. The first 3 days all i thought about was smoking. took off work and just walked my dog every time i wanted to smoke. Poor dog was wore out. Cleaned my house from top to bottom. read a lot on line. Had a few tears just because I was emotional. But I push on.

Now two weeks later my friend asked me how not smoking was going. I said fine didn't even think about it today til you brought it up! I still have urges and could slip and smoke. but then i would be right back to giving it up again. I love being a non smoker. Save so much money, don't smell of smoke, sense of smell and food are better. But the best thing of all is I can breath so much better. I smoked for almost 40 years. It will be tough no doubt but easy days ahead. It's worth a try have nothing to lose and every thing to gain. And if you slip you can always start again.

I found this site really helpful. It's good to ask questions and get peoples thoughts.

BTW if you took the time and effort to read Allan Carrs book then you must want to stop. And you have nothing lose by trying you only things to gain. If you slip try again. Best of luck to ya. We be here for you :)

Welcome Nikki, don't over think it just set a day and do it. No one looks forward to it and it's easy to make excuses, like telling yourself you do like it. Smoking robs so much from you, your $$$ your time, health and self esteem. You just need to comitt to the quit and stop, you can use NRT to help manage the cravings. The first part is breaking the habit of the addiction and NRT will help you. Just take one day at a time asnd keep busy☺

Hello Nikki. I advocate smart turkey, but you need to be in the right mindset first or you will be uncomfortable. Did you read my post "Have you Given Up, Given Up? Try it!!!" Ease your way into a quit, while learning the 90% psychological aspect of quitting. Maybe you missed a point that Allan Carr was making, skimmed over it? If you figure out what your "fear " is please let us know so we can use reasonable logic with you to talk you down. Who knows how many others are afflicted with this same block! That is why these forums can be so helpful. Sooner or later , something is put in such a way that it finally hits home.

Quitting can be easy. I am trying to find ways to make it easier. No Nrt will do the quit for you, it only aids. YOU have the put the work into the changes required, day by day. Be comfortable, cravings are mere urges, you have them everyday while you smoked! The fear mongers kept you away from the brass ring for years, but you are here now!

I think you misunderstand Nikki. I really do urge you to read the title of the piece i mention above. It is not about cold/turkey. It is about doing things to change your smoking habits, and being ready to quit psychologically. Then you worry about getting off the nicotine when you are ready. You have to start sometime and some way, and you won't find anything easier.

Let us know what you decide and how you are doing! Anyone can quit. We just now have to get you to believe you can. Read, learn and escape.

If you already have your mind made up that you do NOT want to quit, there is absolutely nothing that can make you.

If you just feel that you are not ready, then read and learn, and when you decide that you are open to the idea, and want to at least try, then start practicing the steps i mentioned. (If you've Given Up, Given Up. Try This!!! post.)

We hope you don't wait some 40 years to take the steps that we finally have. You have computers and access to knowledge at your fingertips.

I never thought i would ever use a computer let alone own one. Now i live on the thing researching, here, playing poker and chatting. We have even cut the cable and just have internet for entertainment.

Never say Never!
