Having another go

I have attempted numerous times to quit smoking using the cold turkey method, i only get to a week or two then relapse because the inner feelings of frustration and anger occur and i usually cannot stand myself lol..... This time i have decided to use NRT method for the first four weeks whilst cutting down gradually in an attempt to break the habit, then plan to withdraw from the nicotine patches after the four week period. I feel I have a strong mindset with this plan although i am still technically getting nicotine in my system over the first four weeks, however my lungs will be getting a rest from the dreadful smoke.

Thanks for your kind words Robn... I have smoked since I was17yrs and I am now55 . I think this site is perfect and just what I need to get through .....I love reading all the stories and don’t feel so alone ....

Welcome Tanys, I too cannot quit cold turkey as I'd turn into a wilderbeast lol Good plan to use NRT to help you on your way, there is no shame in it. It's only a shame to stay smoking and letting it rob you of so many things. Even using NRT it can still be challenging but it helps make it more bearable. You sound like you are ready to take on this journey (well as ready as anyone can be)😊 and you have a good mindset. Stay with the website it is a an awesome support and stay strong.

Thanks Leeann, for your support these words and support just keep you getting through some tuff periods of the day, so a big thank you, also congratulations on your progress, can you please let me know how you go with the parting of the NRT and if the withdrawals are like day one of cold turkey, i would be very interested.

Hi Tanys, I am 4 months quit tomorrow. YAY!!!! I started my journey with gum, then switched to lozenges, I let go of the lozenges at around the 3 month mark, it was a little challenging for a week of some cravings but I just replaced the lozenges with breath mints and a bit of slow deep breathing to help the cravings pass. There was honestly no temptation to have a smoke as I was over the harder part of the addiction which is the habit, I just had to face the final part of the addiction and that was the nicotine. Different styles of quitting work for different people, whatever helps you get there doesn't really matter in the grand scheme, it's the destination that counts😊

That’s so true Leeann it’s definitely a personal journey but great to share experiences.....congratulations on your achievement ... I hope I can do it this time 💞

Hi Red, you know yesterday that was my thought pattern , today i have a different one!!!!, and so now i'm on a rollacoaster in my mind as predicted lol. I did some research last night about our Nicotine receptors ( or the feel good receptors in our brain) which i think has really helped me understand what i am experiencing, in order for me to be successful i needed to understand why the withdrawls occur, so i can beat them ... I visit this interesting site on Whyquit and read some of the research and it made sense to me. So today i'm not wearing a patch and feel i have the knowledge that i need to get me through the withdrawal period..... I feel my mindset is strong but through out my life i have learnt not to be overly confident because if you become overly confident life for me has a way of showing me not to get to big for my boots HaHa!!!!. However i feel quietly confident in my self to beat the experiences of my receptors needing more nicotine which gives me a false sense that smoking is my feel good device. If these experiences get to bad for me i'll will place half of the patch back on and slowly tapper off, i just want to try without any nicotine patch given that i have new understanding of this dreadful habit that i created for myself. BUT i am confident no matter what..... i will not have one puff again, because it will just build more receptors that will crave for more nicotine and then the cycle begins and it only takes 10 seconds for the puff to hit the brain to make more receptors to crave. My job here is to kill off the nicotine receptors not build new ones !!!!!. Thanks for your support
