Getting closer to my quit date

Posted in Getting started
schedule 5 Sep 2016

So, i planned on giving up smoking earlier this year, start of june to be exact, I did not smoke for one day. The next day i got a phone call (I am the unit controller for the SES in town) saying that we were going to have a flood and without even thinking about it i just jumped in the car, pulled up at the servo and bough my usual red bull and smokes and went to get everyone prep'd for our flood, since then we've had eleven floods and im still smoking. I have made this coming friday my quit day and i'm very nervous about it as its getting closer. The more i think about my quit day and me quiting the more i seem to want to smoke.

I have been a smoker for 14 years. If you have any tips or advice i'd love to hear it.

Thanks

I think that the preparation and thinking about it is really hard, don't think in terms of absolutes, think one at a time, ie one cigarette not smoked, one hour one day etc, on here you will find many inspirational people who are all going through the same thing, so read lots of posts, write your own posts, rant, yell, scream often, I do and have. You have taken a big step just getting on here. Everyone is in the same boat and on different points on a very difficult journey, oh did you think I had a magic wand to make it easy. Sorry this is something you have to do and go through yourself but don't worry we are all here for you, sorry I can't reach to hold your hand. Good luck hang in there one step at a time, keep coming back and let us know how you get on

Hi Cameron,

I found the more I thought about my quit day approaching - the more I was going to be lost and losing something big - and honestly that's exactly how I felt when the day came. I'm only 8 days in and that feeling still hasn't left me yet - I'm told it will - so as Chezzel states correctly above - take each day at a time. The big picture is overwhelming so concentrate on the small achievements - one hour - one cigarette not smoked - one full day - etc etc.

I find by "checking in" on here I'm accountable to myself and the people on here that offer advice and most importantly encouragement. I also have a bottle of water everywhere I go now (this is new to me) and when the cravings get bad I drink it slowly - seems to help me

You can do this Cameron :)

I found it was actually "Margaret Thatcher" trying to convince me to smoke not to mention reward myself for any milestone reached. If you do not convince yourself you can beat your habit you may just be beating yourself up and therefore fail. Do you really want to quit. If so, convince yourself.

Thanks everyone. I am doing well this morning, haven't had one yet. I usually do when I first get up around 5am. And cut back from 25/day to 12 yesterday.

Thanks for your advise 👍

Hey Cameron 1987, mate i know it's tough. I am now on 50days after 52yrs smoking. However, if you really want to quit it is to start immediately. Throw out all your smokes and ashtrays and use nrt to your preference. I know it will be hard (been there) however i do not believe in cutting down or setting a quit date for various reasons. Keep posting. Cheers.

My revised quit date is this Thursday, so I'll be thinking of you. I'm taking a different tact. 'I am excited to finally be a none smoker' - 'Can't wait for Thursday so I'll finally be free'. 'No more sticking like an ashtray'. Let's hope by Thursday I believe it!!! Good luck and try to be excited by it. I've been on Champax this time round and I think it's going to be a good thing. I don't really feel like a smoke and when I am smoking it's making my feel physically ill. Mind you, on Champax for 3 weeks so a little longer than what they said. Good luck!!!
