Putting on weight

This is all new to me I have tried to stop smoking I can't count how many times. I was in hospital a couple of weeks ago in ICU then transferred to a ward for over a week and did not think about or crave a smoke I then get home and what do I do straight away have a smoke. I am scared of putting on weight as the medication already has put on a extra 18kg. I can't have anymore tablets already take a lot. Please help me

Previously I was a complete cough potato but after quitting I got such an influx of oxygen in blood that I just had to do something. I chose riding bicycle...It really helps to do something active

Hi and welcome Alena. The mind is an amazing thing. When one knows they cant smoke eg, hospital, long flights...it doesnt matter but as soon as the mind knows it can be had...BAM. Understands how you feel. There are many ways to quit and they all differ for everyone. Keep reading up on different quit methods , talk to your doctor, chew sugarless gum. You will get a lot of encouragement and support on here too....keep reading peoples experiences and responses...its all very helpful. Goodluck.

Hi Alena, the most important thing is to stop smoking. That's the most harmful part, the weight gain can be dealt with as part of the distraction from smoking. That probably doesn't make much sense but what I mean is. When you feel like reaching for a cig, go for a short walk or go upstairs then come back down again. Replace your cig with a cup of Green Tea & Jasmine (it has a sweeter taste), it will distract you for a few moments (enough to forget that craving) and will increase your metabolism by 5%. Let me know if it helps, good luck. Like I said at the beginning though the most important thing is to stop smoking, you can deal with everything else afterwards.

I have put on some kg's sense stopping but at 79 days no nicotine its time to start cutting back the sugar and for the life of me find it somewhere inside me that walking around the block endless times was not so hellishly boring.
good luck with the stopping it can be done I did it !!

I am 107 days without cigarettes. I've put on the weight but in the last 30 days I've lost the weight and am now actually lighter than when I quit. I've purposely cut down on sugar. Admittedly I need to break the routine and eat something sweet now and again but its becoming a treat rather than a habit.
The last two days have been an eye opener on my exercise walks. I've realised that my upper body is super stiff from stress so I've been doing some neck and back exercises and also putting my body in some kungfu like positions to stretch muscles that are never used. I'm beginning to see how weak and tired my upper body is, especially the neck and shoulders. I'm posting this to help someone who might be the same as me and also its good to write about it so that I'll remind myself. Yes, tomorrow I want to exercise my neck and shoulders again and not just go for the walk. BTW. If you feel like you need a cig, just go for a walk. In the beginning I was walking all the time ..
