Saving money on aged pension

My aim is to give up smoking altogether as 1) I cannot afford it, 2) health reasons. I have been smoking for 52 years and have only given up once before for 2 years. I have made lots of attempts but have never succeeded. Lots of stress in my life with bipolar ex husband and a child on autism spectrum.

I have found that by telling friends and family that I am trying to quit has. It worked due to lack of u dee stand with addition to cigarettes. I need people to support me who understand this. I hope you are out there 😀

I want to be able to add more to context as this would help considerably. I usually smoke up to 40 a day and decided last night I would give up cold turkey but it hasn't work although only on day 1. I had my first puff from a cigarette butt at 12.30 pm when I normally would have had 8 or more with my first morning coffees. I wasn't going to go shopping today to make myself not smoke but I really had to shop for food. I had an encounter with a really rude check out person, a young male, who was very disrespectful. After packing my shopping iinet my car boot I went and bought a packet of cigs but only 26 where I normall would buy a carton of 40s. I had one in the car on the way home and have had two more since I got home even before I unpacked the shopping 😟

We all definately understand here, you are with the right crowd. At least you managed to refrain from all those smokes with coffee, that's an achievement in itself. Stress is a big trigger and it sounds like you have lots of it, you also managed to stop from buying the usual carton, also a great achievement, so good on you. Keep at it and just know that taking baby steps is a great start to your journey. Well done for being determined to give it a go, Keep trying. Never stop trying to quit & you will eventually get there.

Thanks again, Bronte. I look forward to checking in every day. I need the unbiased support. I'm sure family and friends mean well but sometimes their comments don't show they understand the addiction, especially those who have never smokes or are reformed smokers. "Just stop" is not helpful. 😀

I totally agree & I guess it would be hard to understand as it would seem to a non smoker such a pointless and ridiculous thing to do & it is but though we know it's senseless it is a crazy & difficult addiction. It's very simple for them to say just stop, yeh right, I really do wish it was that easy!!

Hi Penpal, welcome!! the good news is you have come to right place for support encouragement and good tips to help you on this journey. Just keep posting.Remember it is achievable but the best is it starts with tiny steps and small achievable goals. Also the quit line is great in helping you with a plan and offering great advice in terms of options to assist. I found them really good in helping me decide how to do it and explaining the steps I needed to take. This has been most successful attempt ever and a lot of it is due to the great support I have got from my new cyber mates on this site. Sooooo keep posting and happy quit planning.

Hi Penpal71, I feel your pain as we all do on this site! Most family whom haven't smoked don't understand so it's really hard for them to support you as much as they probably do want to! My daughter is Aspergers and causes a lot of grief so my smoking healed a lot to calm myself down and debrief with my husband (who is still smoking for now). It took me a long time to finally quit, I was also having 8 smokes and 3 coffees before 8am!!! But I'm done now hated wasting my time and letting these awful 'things' control me!!!! I didn't make it a priority to quit and contracted emphysema in the process!
You have lots of support on this site, I've found so many people here whom are so caring and really understand my journey. They always have positive comments and good tips!
Good luck and keep focused!
Make it a priority!

Hi penpal71, I tried champix it had a terrible side affect with my blood pressure. I had actually tried everything on the market and hypno, acupuncture etc. then I found these cytisine oral strips they are from a company called 'quit 4 good' they have payment Plans and do it cheaper for pensioners! They are from Australia/NSW. The strips are fantastic first thing that has stopped the cravings for me! I didn't have any cravings at all only the 'thought' that I should be having a smoke! I'm so glad I tried them. It's only been 34 days but I can breathe!!!!
Good luck 😀

Thanks for your comments Nannette and Kazzy. I too have emphysema Kazzy, and I have an adult son with Aspergers so I understand! I will look into the cytosine strips. How are they difference from nicotine patches?
