Hard to get started

I have a script for Champix but I am petrified about getting started. I dont suffer from any emotional/depressive illnesses but I am afraid that medication can alter my normally happy-go-lucky attitude. I have been smoking for 26 years and have about 10cigs per day. Very busy life with 3 teenage boys, cigarettes give me my 'time-out' and seem to calm my nerves. I really want to quit for my health, my family, cost etc...but am afraid of consequences of quitting. Most people I know that have quit seem to have put on a lot of weight. I am not overweight and could not bear that. Even two or three kgs would be too much for my small frame. I really do want to quit... I hate that I am addicted to such a dangerous substance and my husband and boys hate it too. :(

Choose things to do to fill the position of the cigarettes you used to smoke. Make the activities last as long as a craving or a cigarette would. Some new things you can take up on a daily basis. Other stuff you might like to do occasionally. You could read a book daily. Or you could go rock climbing with the boys. You could listen to music for twenty minutes. You could do a relaxation tape instead of a smoke. Your taking up a new lifestyle. You could celebrate with a Christmas in July Party. Tell as many people as you can that you want to quit. I knit each day. I have taken up drawing too. It is inexpensive. I use a pad of paper and a graphite pencil. Another inexpensive, constructive activity that helps with quitting is a walk around the block. You could take care of your nails. You could make some handmade chocolates. The endorphins in the chocolates gives you a little buzz, not unlike a smoke fix. You can save for a fresh pair of jeans. You could join a walking group at the swimming pool. You could crunch on celery and carrot sticks with crackers and ricotta. You could do the dishes after the evening meal to avoid smoking. You could have some herbal tea. That is ten things that you can do daily instead of smoking. You will only be limited by your energy levels and your imagination. You will be limited by either your physical energy or your mental energy, whichever is lowest. The other limit you have is merely the imagination. congratulations. You are choosing life. If you cannot do it alone ask your boys and your Husband for help. When your feeling rough ask for their help. They will help in unexpected ways. They are not in your rut and they can see through it and they will help you. They might cook you a special dinner when you least expect it or go for a walk with you. The will can get fatigued and you will need some rewards to aim for and some back-up plans. Best Wishes.

I am week 11 of champix and week 9 smoke free. The first thing to do get the script filled. Don't overthink what may or may not happen. This is the addiction driving you. Nicotine withdrawal creates anxiety as does nicotine. Set a quit date and start champix and take one day at a time.

Thanks for some great advice. It will be a lifestyle change and I need to set a date. It sounds silly but I am struggling with that first step. Kids are on school holidays. First day back - 14 July sounds good.

Anta, my best friend and I are both using champix, day 46 smoke free! Neither of us has become grumpy bears, actually not even in the slightest! I feel energized, I feel healthy and I smell nice- it is so refreshing! Using champix really has made it so much easier, but there will be times when you do need to use your willpower, but you can do it! Take the champix with your meals, that took care of any nausea or headaches, and by the way, not everybody has side effects. I am quite thin myself and didn't gain a pound, I just started drinking a lot of water and herbal tea. So set your date, get excited about it and do it! All the best to you!
