I started smoking at the age of 12 and am now 55. I dont know how I am going to live without my smokes but have to try as I am tired of spending so much money on something that is ruining my health. I am terrified of stopping as I feel that there wont be any more joy in my life. Its sounds silly but I cannot help how I feel. I have tried to stop  several times but have always failed. However I hope to succeed this time. I cannot remember a time when I was not dependant on cigarettes so unsure how I am going to get through each day. If anyone has any tips for me please help.

schedule 29 Apr 2014

I am on day 25 of my journey, and it's going but not the easiest thing I've ever done. I started when I was 13 and now I'm 50. I battled breast cancer when I was 43 and I'm sure this is harder, but like you I am throwing money and my health away. I started with smoking outside because I always smoked in the house, so that way I got rid of a few bad habits in the house. Then I came across this site and read a lot of stories, then picked a quit date, it was April 5th and I haven't had no smokes since. I felt like I lost my best friend, I was depressed and just want to be home left alone. It is getting better and now I keep saying I can't go back to day 1 and start all over again and I want to be free so I keep on going. I am on the patch, I knew I couldn't do it alone. I also have a e-cig for emergencies which I don't use that much anymore and I'm on this site everyday at least once ready about other people's journeys. Make a plan for yourself and all you can do is try, it's hard but I think it's all going to be worth it.. I also have saved 350.00 so that's real positive thing.. I also shocked all of my friends and family that I've made it this far so I want to keep going. Good luck...

Thanks for your reply. I am stopping this Saturday so less than three days left. Congratulations on staying smoke free. I will certainly try my best.

I am cutting down to quit. My goal was to have five cigarettes or less, including smoke free days. I have nearly made it. I was desperate when I came onto this site. I was hovering around twelve smokes a day. Which was more than at other times. I couldn't get a grip on even, just cutting down. I haven't had a smoke free day yet. Apart from that I have reached my goal for a week. Now I'd like to limit it to two at the most. I will ask my doctor for the strongest patch. I feel ready for a smoke free day. I know what you mean about losing a friend. However what you will find is a true friend in yourself. Plan restful activities as well as other distractions. Will power fatigues, so you will also need activities for quiet time across your day. Those cigarettes you would have had because you tired. How many cigarettes did you have and how many different things do you need to do to not smoke them?

Hi Diane. Try to hang in there because it is worth it. I am 70 years of age and smoked for 55 years. I have been clean for 12 months but still hanker for a cig. now and again but it is only a passing feeling. Keep using this site it will help you through the most difficult times. Good luck.
