getting my head ready for day 1

Posted in Getting started
schedule 7 Nov 2013

Over the last 12 minths every morning just in that period where you are half asleep and half awake, my inner voice talks to me "you have to stop smoking, You are killing yourself, do it today!"  I listen, I agree, I will do it today, then I am fully awake I push those thoughts from my head, I walk to the kitchen get a drink of water and LIGHT UP.

I work really hard (Disabilities) 4 days a week, have my grandchildren 2 days a week and recently I have been feeling sooooooo tired, so went to the Doctor and had chest xray, OMG need a CT Scan something there????

Cried for 2 days, could not stop, guilt mainly, I did this too myself and now is the time to pay.  Got the results, no cancer Thank you God, however getting very close to emphysema.  It's time and I wish I could say I am determined, but not there yet.

History....I started smoking at age 35, yeah I know WHY, so many reasons, all of them a nonsence really, so have been smoking for 24 years now REALLY!, where did that time go, Oh yes, up in smoke.

I have set my quit day for November 11, rememberance day, hoping that will help if I keep remembering, it' s time to ensure I live a little longer, enjoy my life a little better and BE PROUD OF MYSELF!

Well done on making that first step in making a quit date. We all know how terrible it is to be a smoker however we have still done it, with just like you many excuses. Now after your health issues you know that excuses just won't do anymore. Do the pros and cons you will see the reasons for quitting far out weigh ANY reason to keep up the disgusting habit. Keep a positive mind set , be aware it won't be easy and importantly keep posting and reading this site is soooo helpful and can help support and inspire you on your journey!

Goodluck, you CAN do it!

Getting your head ready is the hardest bit! And your brain keeps trying to trick you and tell you that you are not quite ready yet. You do have some incentive to overcome that though, not just the health scare but the grandchildren, I'm sure you want to be around to see them.

I spent a bit of preparation time looking at all my triggers, so I could be for-warned and avoid all the triggers that were possible to avoid.

I also looked at those cigarettes that my brain told me I HAD TO HAVE, and one at a time just didn't have those ones (still had all the others tho!) That helped me learning that missing the HAD to ones didn't flip me out, even if it was one at a time, putting it together later was then easier.

I also chucked zyban, rescue remedy, bach flowers and whatever else was legit at it - just to try to make sure.

Its a fun ride; some is easy some is hard, it can also do some strange things to your head!! Being prepared for it to be hard and getting the support from this site REALLY helped me, just reading all the stories was so inspirational it got me actually started. I am now 56 days smoke free after 40 years of smoking, so although it is tough it is also do-able.

Congrats on making the decision, and good luck and strength on your quit journey,

You have taken the first big step and for me it was the hardest. I alwys said i wouldnt give up as i loved it too much. Mow i hate it well I've hated it for a lond time now and really cant remember the last cig i actually enjoyed. 11 days now without a smoke and i am feeling great!!

Speak to your dr and get some help. It could be NRT or something along those lines. Good luck and i hope to read more about your progress.

Hi there, what worked for me was sneaking up on the addiction. Just thought one night if I can finish these smokes before I go to bed I'll give it a shot tomorrow. I did, and wet and threw out the butts so I wouldn't be tempted to have a puff on a dog end. The next morning I woke up thinking what's the worst that can happen, just delayed gratification. I absolutely surprised myself by getting through that first day by telling myself if this is too hard I won't do it, but I'll give it a shot. I've been using Nicabate mini lozenges to control cravings, and posted and read other posts on this site for very valued support. I'm now 122 days smoke free, and have gained determination as I go. I guess what I'm trying to say is not to stress too much about your actual quit date, you might be able to try a day or two early, and literally take it hour by hour for the first few days. All the best, you have nothing at all to lose, and everything to gain. And please keep posting.
