I have smoked for over 20 years, I have given up a few times not lasting very long, the longest I went is for 6 months.

I went 6 months it was cold turkey. Due to a traumaful and life changing event in my life I returned to smoking.

I have set a date 15th July 13, but not sure how to prepare myself and fear failure again, I know it doesnt sound very positive, but i hoping you guys out there could give me some pointers..

I have thought about my kids and how they have begged me, I have thought about the health and financial benefits, I have tried to convince myself that large ciggerette corperations and govenments want you to believe it's hard..

My father has told me I am weak and I never will, but I know I can do it.. I just need direction and support

and good luck on each and every one of you on your personal journeys

Hey Gabbie, try changing the thoughts to positive, the word failure.... is not the way to look at it. take it out of your vocabulary . You can do this... you did it for 6 months. I for one found it hard, and anything worth it salt in life is hard. I am 4 weeks today smoke free, I feel great , for years I had people tell me I was weak willed. that negative only brings another. I quit other harder drugs in the past, this is the last to go. Focus on the moment , just that, and only that, for the next hour , I will not smoke. Then day by day and before you know it it you will find day a day where it does not cross your mind. Good luck , keep posting, reading the posts here helps too .

converse is right. Just imagine one day you will not even think about having a smoke. The craving will have disappeared and you will be able to spend all the money you have saved on yourself.

But first you have to take one day at a time.

You can do it but you have to WANT to.

Converse is so right Gabbie. Change the negative thought to a positive. I didn't think ICould do it and it has only been 3 days for me but tiny steps are good. If you can just push back when you have that "I need a smoke" thought for 10 mins and do something else it really works. Oh, and keep reading the stories here cause they really help you to stay on track. Good luck

Hi Gabbie,

Please read my comment I just posted on Trianne's post dated 21/6 as it so applies to you too. The longest time I've given up is 3 years and, like you, I went back to the ciggies when i believed my life journey became too rough to bear. (Yes I'm a grade A student in the school of Stupid Thinking - ciggies didn't help at all!!).

In a nutshell - positive thinking, a good support network and smart strategies self-tailored to YOU will make you a winner. Use previous attempts to your advantage. And keep posting so we can all help each other.

Keep smilin',

Sunny

I quit smoking for 25 years and then took it up again. You will never be really safe from it. But smoking doesn't change the situations you are in. Don't like to say it, but don't listen too much to your father. You are not weak, You are a nicotine addict- like many of us here. As for preparing yourself- look at each craving and ask yourself why do you want this cigarette? Having the cigarette won't change anything else in your life. It won't make any other problems in your life go away. It's just time out- that's all. When you've finished the cigarette, and the next one, nothing else has changed. You have obviously identified all the positives from quitting and maybe you should just try to do the six months again. As for me, I'm finding it hard. I always find an excuse to light up. Never mind an hour at a time for me it will be ten minutes a time. All small steps. Break it down as small as you need to do. Each minute is an achievement. Keep on looking at these posts. We all need support.Smoking when you have a problem in your life doesn't solve the problem, it just gives you another problem to deal with.
