Hi guys. Today is day 1 for me & I'm so nervous weather I can do this or not. I have been a 20plus smoker a day for 20 yrs. The last 3 years it has been my coping mechanism for my eating disorder. My husband has left me & the kids & I now have to give up out of necessity so that I can financially look after my troops. The one thing that is terrifying me is the weight gain - if i gain to much I know I will go back on the smokes again. Have any of you put on much weight with quitting? How hard is it to get thru the first few days? I was so tempted to have one this afternoon when the kids were fighting!!!!

Hi Reece and welcome. If you read up, smoking isn't a coping mechanism it actually adds stress to your life, with regard to weight gain, the answer to that is in your hands, if you exercise and drink plenty of water then you should be ok, plus if you exercise then you're less likely to sit around thinking about smoking.

It can be difficult to get through the first days and weeks, we all struggled, just read the old posts, temptation is always going to be there to smoke if you let it be, I know that sounds ridiculous, but if you look for excuses to smoke then they're very easy to find, but if you're looking for excuses to smoke then you have to ask whether you're committed at all. Trust me if you really want to give up, you'll do it, not saying it'll be easy but you can do it, it really is a mind set. My advice would be to read every single thing you can about smoking, firstly it'll keep you occupied and it'll ram home some of the things we already know about smoking and you'll learn about how much worse for you smoking really is than most of us realised.

Good luck and we're all here to support you.

Welcome Reece, try not to be nervous you will need ALL your energy in the first couple of weeks to stay off the stupid things. However, it is worth it and it does get easier.

Meanie here has hit the nail on the head. And if you need distracting come to this site and read peoples posts - it's incredible how some people seem to describe exactly what you are going thorugh and it really helped me to maintain my focus.

It got to the point where I thought I cannot have a smoke imagine letting everyone know I fell off the wagon.

Best of luck and keep us updated.

I have put on about 5 kilo's but that will be easier to shift then the giving up smoking. I thought it was a stress relief also but have worked out it was making stress worse. I can't leave the house with out mu smokes when and where can i have my next smoke. Yes the first few days will be awfull but drink lots of water ,,,walk and count to 100 lots. I also sucked on lifesavors a lot the first couple of weeks. You can do it and when you get into bed tonight think of how proud you are for not giving in...............
