Quit Day is Set

Last January I began what is turning out to be a brilliant year for breaking my bad habits.

In my mind I set 4 goals, one for each quarter of the year. To lose 50 pounds in weight and made myself proud by reaching my goal in 3 months by exercising. Next was to stop drinking red-wine. I went cold turkey, swapping it for diet cola. I haven't touched a drop for 6 months and have no desire for alcohol at all. Third was to QUIT smoking and to see myself as a non-smoker and finally Fourth was to pay off a debt.

It's October and I must now face the hardest of my challenges. I have to become a non-smoker after smoking on and off for over 30 years. The debt is well and truly getting smaller and will definitely be paid off if I quit smoking.

This is my second attempt to quit. I lasted for 4 days last week and caved after I got all worked up over an argument. I realized that I smoke mostly when I want to escape outside and get away from conflict or when I'm worrying about money problems!

This time when I quit I need to be prepared with a Plan for what to do when I get stressed and cranky. I need to learn how to stay calm and not go and buy cigarettes. There are members in my family that smoke and I mustn't resort to asking them for a cigarette. I haven't in the past and I mustn't do it after Sunday.

My stopping smoking will change our family dynamics, I know, but I can't make smoking my escape anymore. My third and fourth goals are about money essentially. If I stop smoking now, many of the problems we have in my family will disappear because I am wasting a lot of money everyday.

My quit date is Sunday, it's not a special date yet but it will be if I succeed and become a non-smoker.

I've read a few posts here and could post so many congratulations already. I want to be committed to my decision to quit, like you are all trying to be and that's my story up to now.

Hey there tarnished. your story is very much like mine. I set first a weight loss goal and have lost 18 kilos, then I moved on from a past breakup and now I am quitting. I have had 3 attemps and now I am really serious about getting free from the smoking.

I have found that this online program and blogging really helps me because everyone is going through the same thing and they understand. Also they can give you suggestions to the things that have worked for them.

I wish you luck for Sunday. I am using patches I have found that they take the edge off the craziness.

If you find yourself going outside or moving towards that smoke area, just keep going. Rack up a 10 or 20 min walk instead of lighting up. It helps if your stressed or worked up and will move you past the craving as they don't last that long. Funny how people don't notice you vanish for a bit because they are used to you dissapearing out for a fag. Before anyone realises, your looking healthier, smelling better and getting fitter taking walking breaks instead of smoke breaks.
