    Some medical professionals advise use of nicotine substitutes for a slow and gradual cessation. 15yrs ago on a new years eve at the stoke of midnight I stopped cigarettes and alcohol together cold turkey. Lasted 5 yrs until seeing a pub band and had a drink and cigarette. Have been now alcohol free 5yrs, so don't have that as a tempter to also smoke
